We often talk about equality as if it is a given fair treatment for everyone. Governments launch programs, NGOs raise funds, and corporate initiatives showcase gender equity in all to tip the scales.

But ask yourself: if equality is the goal, why do most countries have ministries for women's affairs but none for men's? Why do billions flow toward girls' education and women's health, while men's higher suicide rates, falling educational outcomes, and prison overrepresentation barely surface in institutional agendas?
This isn't about undermining women's progress. It's about seeing that our corrective systems may have created a new form of bias and that AI systems are now inheriting it.

The Institutional Imbalance

Globally, we see:

  • Women's ministries in many countries

  • Initiatives for girls' education and women in tech, well-funded and high-profile

In contrast, the institutional support for men is sparse:

  • Men's ministries? Essentially non-existent

  • Male suicide prevention programs? Underfunded, even though in 2021, approximately 519,000 of 746,000 global suicides were male. (GBD 2021)

  • Educational support for boys? Noticeably limited, despite boys lagging significantly for example, in OECD countries, boys underperform girls in reading by about 24 score points, and are more often low performers(OECB 2022)

Disposability in conflict zones: Many countries maintain military conscription laws that apply only to men, expecting them to serve in combat while women are exempt. Globally, men are overwhelmingly expected to fight in conflicts.

Mental health gaps: Mental illness and addiction disproportionately affect men, but institutional focus and funding lag behind.

If these problems primarily affected women, they'd likely be labeled "inequality." For men, they're often dismissed as personal responsibility.

How Bias Travels Into AI

AI doesn't think its learn from data shaped by our institutions:

  • Public policy datasets prioritise women's issues

  • Academic research disproportionately covers women's challenges

  • NGO narratives frame "gender equality" primarily as women's advancement

  • Funding flows consistently favour women-focused programs

When AI systems train on this landscape, they inherit its blind spots. To them, "equality" means "helping women," while men's struggles barely register.

As a result, AI used in:

  • Policy advising will continue pushing women-first initiatives

  • Funding allocation may under prioritise male-focused programs

  • Bias detection may overlook discrimination against men

Why Women-Focused Structures Made Sense But Needs Updating

Historically, women were excluded from education, property, politics, and work. Creating women-focused institutions was a corrective necessity. Yet as society evolves, leaving structures unbalanced risks turning corrective measures into systemic bias. Helping women becomes the de-facto definition of equality even when men now face grave disadvantages in suicide, education, or incarceration.

A Path Toward Real Equality

The answer isn't wiping out women's support it's expanding equity to include men as well.

→ Address human challenges, not gender labels:

  • Offer mental health services to all

  • Support struggling students regardless of gender

  • Deliver economic aid based on need, not gender

→ Create parallel institutional structures:

  • If there's a women's ministry, consider a men's counterpart

  • Fund boys' education where they lag

→ Train AI on balanced datasets:

  • Include male-focused advocacy alongside female-focused narratives

  • Audit algorithms for all gender biases, not just male→female

  • Build equality assessments that highlight gaps wherever they exist

This isn't just about men or women. It reveals how bias creeps into AI via well-intentioned but incomplete institutions.

The same applies to:

  • Racial equity programs that overlook smaller minority groups

  • Disability initiatives that cater to some impairments but ignore others

  • Economic justice efforts that address major poverty forms but miss less-visible ones

Overcorrection creates distorted data and AI will magnify those distortions.

The AI Training Data Contamination

What AI learns from current institutional patterns:

  • Equality = Supporting Women (based on resource allocation patterns)

  • Men's Issues = Non-Issues (based on absence of institutional focus)

  • Fairness = Asymmetric Support (based on one-sided advocacy structures)

The feedback loop problem: As AI systems make decisions based on this biased training, they perpetuate resource allocation toward women's programs, fail to identify men's issues as equality concerns, and reinforce institutional blindness toward male disadvantages.

Equality or Correction?

The most challenging truths often hide inside our well-meaning efforts. Women-focused programs were once necessary; many still are. But unchecked, they can crystallise into structural imbalance.

AI doesn't know context or intent. It sees patterns:

  • Equality = aid women

  • Men's challenges = not problems

If we want AI to manifest real fairness, our institutions must embody it through:

  • Equal regard for suffering

  • Equal advocacy for disadvantage

  • Equal investment in need

  • Equal recognition of all disparities

Otherwise, we risk building AI that deepens the selective definition of equality we choose today.

So the uncomfortable question remains: Are we building AI that compensates for history, or AI that models real equality?

The answer will define the fairness of the AI systems we rely on tomorrow.
